securing your computerOne of the ways to keep your data breach insurance costs down is by securing your computer to avoid claims. You may ask how this is done and the answer is really quite easy. The top proven technique to block hackers from attacking is to make better passwords.

Your password is the doorway to your computer and your valuables inside. Doors can be cheap and weak or extremely strong. It’s all up to you to make it the way you want it.

Today’s hackers are using very expensive software that almost works miracles. The only defense to that is hard to hack passwords. In a recent interview, a reformed hacker stated that 20 characters should be the minimum used.

In securing your computer it is now recommended to use a sentence or phrase, instead of numbers or letters alone. You will ideally want something that you can remember, but not what is usually looked for. Something such as, “My grandma loves me no matter what! That’s 29 characters, 1 capital letter and an exclamation point. It’s easy to remember, but would be very hard to hack.

The next step that can be taken is to add a second door to our computer. Again thinking of a house, many have a screen door and then the main front door. We have the first door in place and want to add the second.

The following website, twofactorauth.org lists a wide variety of websites that will add an extra password to gain access. When you check it out, you will see many that you use every day.

The next question you might ask is how you will keep track of all those passwords. There are two options for doing that. The first is to use a password storage service that uses cloud technology.

The following companies, well known for their service, come with both free and paid options. They are LastPass, Dashlane and 1Password. Using these services your information is always available online.

Now, if you would prefer to have your information on your physical computer, you can use the following. These are RoboForm, Password Safe or KeePass. These also offer both free service and paid service.

The last thing that you’ll want to do when securing your computer is to change your passwords annually. Passwords may need to be changed more often, should a regularly used website get hacked itself.

The most important thing is to vary your passwords and not use the same couple all of the time.

That’s it for today. As always, if you need help, information or would like to purchase insurance, MrInsurability is only a click away!
